Is the Yo-kai Watch Worth Buying?
To most parents, the Yo-kai Watch isn’t going to make a whole lot of sense. Firstly, it is not an actual watch. Rather, it is a coin-activated toy that the child wears on the wrist. Each medal represents a different creature, and when the medal is inserted into the watch, the creature is summoned to life. The watch plays unique sounds and states the name of the creature being summoned, and the rest is down to the child’s imagination. For young fans of the Yo-kai universe, this will be fantastic, but parents might not appreciate it as much.
It’s worth stating that the watch itself is huge. Absolutely huge. Although this toy is aimed at children 4 and up, 4-year-olds will look ridiculous with such a large, cumbersome toy strapped to their wrist. This makes it somewhat impractical for day to day wear. For most children, the Yo-kai Watch is something that will be worn only when being played with, as they are likely to hit it off any number of things if being worn outside of play time.
Fans of the Yo-kai Watch will love this toy, but children not yet exposed to the Yo-kai universe may be left scratching their heads over what the fuss is all about. However, if your child has friends who are also interested in Yo-kai, the watch is a fantastic toy. Each watch is likely to be shipped with different medals, so children can come together and play with each other’s medals. In this way, the toy is also suitable for children interested in building a collection, as additional medals can be purchased separately. Ultimately, if your child enjoys Yo-kai, they will love the Yo-kai Watch. If they don’t then this toy will gather dust on the shelf.
